Last night at the superb Art Gallery in Sydney, HBOC was awarded a Highly Commended for our entry “Community Cooperation in Sustaining Birdlife” in the Green Globe Awards ceremony attended by the Minister for Environment, Mr Mark Speakman. Lucas Grenadier and I accepted the award on behalf of HBOC members who can be incredibly proud of this achievement which honours our efforts to sustain, protect and raise awareness about Australian Birdlife. We were one of three finalists in the Community Sustainability section which was won by “Repower Shoalhaven – Pioneering Community Solar in Australia”. The group helps businesses go solar without large upfront costs by developing the project and finding local investors.
The winner of the Premiers Award for Environmental Innovation was “Brookfarm Pty Ltd – Muesli Powered by the Sun”, a family-owned small business based in Byron Bay, Brookfarm produces gourmet macadamia products for local and export markets.
The Regional Sustainability Award went to Lismore City Council – A Model of Sustainability” which included use of renewable sources for electricity, biodiversity management strategy in cooperation with landholders, recycling and landfill rehabilitation techniques and the Natural Environment Sustainability Award was won by “Greater Taree City Council and the Water Research Laboratory UNSW – Big Swamp Recovery: Evidence Supporting Innovation”, outcomes included public acquisition of 700 hectares of private land, conversion of agricultural land into an 80-hectare tidal wetland, elevation of ground water levels above the acidic soil layer over 620 hectares of drained paddocks.
So, well done, HBOC members, for it is you who made our Club worthy of this award and keep up the momentum for our birdlife needs our voices to be heard loudly and clearly so they can thrive into the future.
